About

Jahkira Jakes is a self-taught artist from the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Inspired by her father’s creativity and captivated by the interplay of colors, she discovered a love for art at a young age. Her creations have long been a source of joy and comfort—a way to connect more deeply with herself and the world around her.Her work draws from dreams, meditation, and deep emotion, vibrantly bringing to life dreamy yet grounding scenes that celebrate connection and inner truth. As a multidisciplinary artist, Jahkira also explores character design, sculpting, and writing, approaching each medium with curiosity and care.Though naturally shy, she has a deep love for community and hopes her art offers space for play, healing, and authentic expression.
Artist Statement
As a Black woman who loves women, the eldest daughter to young parents, and someone who has always felt deeply, I learned early on to hold space for others before myself. I’ve often felt pressured to hide, reshape, or ignore parts of my identity—to fit in, to feel safe, to be loved. As a result, I’ve learned to be protective of my deepest desires. But my art holds them. It holds the parts of me I’ve struggled to name out loud—and offers the space to finally listen inward.Much of my work depicts cosmic women in vibrant, dreamlike spaces—intuitive expressions of rest, longing, vulnerability, and joy. It speaks to the girl who fears returning to herself because she’s drifted so far from her truth that coming back seems impossible—or worse, that she is unworthy in her authenticity. It’s a reminder that she is always worth returning to.These aren’t just paintings—they’re records of my unfolding. Each piece is a moment of release and reconnection. Often sparked by dreams or meditation, my process honors creation itself as much as the final result. It’s about permission—to explore, to feel deeply, to reclaim my truth. To be bold, soft, and free—all at once.

Primal Play: An Intuitive immersion in Art & Self
A journey into art as self-remembrance instead of self-proving.
My last hope for this project is that it inspires someone to ask for what they need no matter how scary it seems. There are people out there who will say yes, even to your most "cringe" desire.
